There have been cases, like the one settled recently between US Department of Labor and Sandi Group/Corporate Bank Financial Services, where contractors have failed to report injuries and fatalities in a timely manner. Under the Defense Base Act, all approved companies “must report any injury or death to OWCP’s Division of Longshore and Harbor Worker’s Compensation within 10 days.”
In this case, the Sandi Group was fined $75,000 for failing to report on the injuries and deaths of 30
of their employees working in Iraq between 2003 and 2005. In addition, the company agreed that any future violations would result in harsher penalties.
